TEACHING AND LEARNING MATERIALS: Interactive Whiteboard (IWB), Computer, blogspot.com and gmail.com

OBJECTIVE AND AIMS: By the end of the lesson, students would be able to create their own blog using the blogger site.

Step 1	- Ask the students what they know about blog

Step 4 (10 minutes)	- Use IWB and show students how to create account on gmail.com	www.gmail.com
Step 5 (10 minutes)	- Use the IWB and show students how to open a blog site from the Internet	www.blogger.com/start

I was assigned to go to Form 1 to Form 3 classes. The Form 3 class will be held at 11.30 to 12.30, Form 1 at 1.00 – 2.30 and the Form 2 at 3.00 – 3.30. Form 3 class is taught by Ckg Johnny Aqil, Form 2 and Form 1 classes will be taught by Ckg Hj Kamrizan. The Form 3 class was cancelled that day as the students have to attend a function at the Girls Hostel.

For the Form 1 class, they were taught about Robots. The teacher was using Moodle and the Internet to explain his lesson, and then the students were asked to do some exercise on their book, and look for the answer from the Moodle site or the Internet. Then they were brought to a different lab, where MSPSBS Robotic team was demonstrating the school’s robot and ways to control them. The demo was very impressive and interesting to view.

For the Form 2 class, they continue with their PowerPoint presentation done by two different groups.

I am starting my TP at MSPSBS. Arrived in MSPSBS at 7.15 and was welcome by the DP. I was introduced to Robina Goh (HOD for Computer Science), and I was brought to the Computer Lab. I was told that the Form 1 is the only level that is doing the SPN 21 curriculum, while the rest is still using the current curriculum. I will be monitoring the lower secondary for my TP.

The first class I observed was the Form 6, where they are doing their revision for their exam that is going to be held that afternoon. The next class was Form 4 where they are learning to code using C++ programming. For the afternoon session, I was in Form 1 class taught by Hj Kamrizan. The students were taught about Office Automation. I was impressed as the students were doing their work using Moodle. One can observe the lesson from this website;

The last class that I entered was Form 2 students who were doing a group work presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint on Job Assigned. I managed to view 2 groups where they were doing a presentation on Secondary Teacher and Game Programmer

Today is the beginning of our Teaching Practice (TP). I went to S.M PAP Masna. We were being briefed by the Deputy Principal (Academic) of the school. It seems they were not been informed of our arrival. She took down our contact number, and stated that they have to see our TP Coordinator (Dr Leong) before they can accept us. We were told to go home and wait for their call.

Course Title: Methods of Teaching Secondary Computer Studies I

Week 1-2 Assignment

Curriculum: The Brunei secondary computer studies curriculum, its aims and its structure. Comparisons with computer studies curricula in other countries.

For this assignment I will be doing a computer studies curriculum for Year 7 comparing between the curricula in Brunei Darussalam and the curricula in United Kingdom.

In this age, computer technology is changing very fast, the younger people are more technology oriented. One can see people communicate easily by computer through email or mobile phones. It is clear that a new ethos of Learning needs to evolve which integrates this new way of living with traditional educational values. As suggested by Jerome S. Bruner 1996, one needs to underpin the idea of the spiral curriculum. Using this Spiral Curriculum, a student is allowed to revisit the basic knowledge that is taught repeatedly, in order to extend and deepen their knowledge, understanding and skills.

A spiral curriculum is based on the principle that efficient and effective learning is a matter of overlaying multiple layers, multiple exposures to the same ideas but getting ever deeper and richer. A spiral curriculum arranges that the same topic, the same idea, the same lessons, is encountered many times, each time slightly differently, or probing more deeply.

Therefore, the Brunei’s education curricula need to try this spiral curriculum in order to progress with the current technology. With this new curriculum, the teacher is allowed to teach the student repeatedly until their grasp the lessons, therefore the lessons needs to be amended in order to provide more practical using the computers than learning on the computer theories. Theory lessons should be shortened and can be done while doing a practical classes, example, when the student is using the Internet, the teacher can take this moment to teach the students how the data is transferred and what computer equipments are needed to link to the Internet. With this new method, the students can easily understand the theory, and moreover it can provide more time for the students to do their practical works. Students can learn better by doing this new method.

For the evaluation of the Year 7 Computer Studies Curriculum material, I would like to suggest some few amendments in order to make it more up-to-date with today’s technology and more students’ oriented.

Aims
